One big mistake people make is choosing a domain name is that they pick a name that sounds good or cool. This is a big mistake. It is better to base your domain name on the major keyword phrase related to your niche market – your website theme keyword.

Google gives more weight in it’s rankings to websites with domain names related to the search terms people are looking for. So pick your domain name accordingly.

If you market niche is Kite Flying then kiteflying.com would be the ideal domain name for your website.  If your ideal domain name is already taken then you can add a prefix or suffix word to domain name.

NOTE: You can save money using a subdomain. But it does decrease the value of your virtual property – so it is not recommended.  You should purchase a proper domain name.

TIPS

  • Try as much as possible to get .com domain names over .org, or .net
  • Avoid purchasing domains with separators – such as kite-flying.com. We use one I know but it would of helped us more in rankings if we didn’t.
  • If you can not get a .com domain the next best domain to choose would be a .org followed by a .net

Purchasing A Domain

Market Samari has a very handy domain module tool built-in. It gives suggestions on what domain names are available based on your website’s primary keyword phrase.

Once you have your domain name selected, we recommend you use namecheap to register your domain at. They provide a lot of features for free that other services such as godaddy do not.

WARNING: Do not purchase your domain at where you purchase your hosting. There are unfortunately a lot of unscrupulous hosting services out there who want to keep you locked into their hosting plans. If you try to move to another hosting service you may well find that they will not let you transfer your domain.
