Just so you know what you're getting into, very few websites are made "by hand" since about, oh, 2001. Other than learning the very most basics, or doing a simple personal page, you probably won't become proficient enough to make good page.

I would recommend googling "web page design html edit editor tools", reading reviews on the tools, and learning to use a good tool instead. You'll get a lot more bang for your effort.
